Leroy Vickers

Full Biography

Leroy Vickers performs opera, classical theatre and a mix of powerful contemporary ballads to audiences throughout Europe.

Born in Hull in 1982, Leroy was schooled at his local comprehensive where he discovered his love for Shakespeare, studying Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet, and later opera and the classics.

At 16-18yrs Leroy was part of a boy band and regularly performed around Hull to audiences of over 4,000. At 18 he formed his own four-piece male harmony group, performing at various venues and entering talent contests around the UK, most of which they won!

In 2006 he was invited to be part of a classical pop quartet, as seen on Classic FM TV, which culminated in the group winning the Blackpool ‘Talk of the Coast’ talent competition.

In 2007 he was asked to perform Music of the Night and Nessun Dorma at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London and received a standing ovation.
After Pavarotti died in September 2007, Leroy worked with John Michael Mackfall to produce a song as a tribute to the great man. John wrote Luciano and Leroy translated some of the lyrics into Italian. All credit to John for producing such a great song (Leroy).
In 2008 Leroy opened the match at Preston North End football ground to a 15,000 crowd, performing Nessun Dorma and again receiving a standing ovation.

In this year he also produced his first solo CD, Leroy V, with Plaza Records. One of the original tracks on this album is Liberta Siamo Noi (We are Freedom), with music by Roberto Danova and words by Alberto Testa (The Prayer, Quando Quando Quando).

Over the next three years Leroy experienced a number of highs. He won a talent contest on the CBBC TV programme The Slammer, performed Music of the Night in front of Sir Cameron Mackintosh at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London and was recommended for auditions for the part of Khashoggi in We Will Rock You at The Dominion Theatre, London.

Leroy frequently sings at Hull’s KC Stadium to packed crowds of over 20,000, and was chosen to sing at their special celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

2013 After performing with his great friend, Martin Jackson, on many occasions over the years, they have decided to move forward with their singing career as a duo. One of the highlights this year has been performing with Spike Edney’s SAS Band (Spike’s All Stars). Spike is Musical Director and keyboardist with legendary rock band Queen. The Opera Duo opened the show for Spike at The Brook in Southampton and although the crowd was there for a night of rock, they welcomed the duo with open arms and joined in a rousing rendition of Volare.

Leroy & Martin were proud to perform at the charity gig Concert at the Kings and appeared on the billing with such iconic artists as Georgie Fame, 10cc, Dr Feelgood, Roger Taylor, Spike Edney and the SAS Band, Andy Scott, Kiki Dee, Madeline Bell, Benny Gallagher and Marc Martell from Queen Extravaganze, with compere’s Mike Read and Dan Chisholm.

In December 2013, The Opera Duo opened the show for the SAS Band at GLive, Guildford, as part of the special 20th Anniversary Reunion of The Cross. The line up included Roger Taylor, Spike Edney and his band plus powerful performances by Madeline Bell, Patti Russo and Midge Ure.

Leroy is excited about the future, “It’s simple really, I just want to keep on singing and to bring Opera and the classics to the people, to everyone out there who thinks it’s not for me, because it can be, opera can change songs into something more magical and moving. It’s a pleasure to be doing that with my best friend Martin.”
